This fact took some digging to prove, in the book "Jehovah's Witnesses in the Divine Purpose" page 47 it says that Brother Rutherford and others was sent to New York to purchase buildings for the new HQ of the IBSA. And that in 1908 the brownstone parsonage at 124 Columbia Heights was purchased as well as the nearby Plymouth Congregational Church. Here is where American history crossroads with Witness history (in fact there are many such crossroads). I found this one very interesting. Henry Ward Beecher owned these prior and he was a very famous preacher and antislavery supporter.
The Divine Purpose book continues to say that Abraham Lincoln attended the church as well as stayed at the home on 124 Columbia Heights. My next step was to Google this. Wow, much more. Yes Lincoln and Beecher were very close and even after Lincoln was president, he still visited Beecher and Beecher had the freedom to write President Lincoln on the issue of slavery, on the very issue of Emancipation of the slaves. The church basement was used as part of the "underground railroad" when bringing black people north to freedom. Frederick Douglas attended services here as well. So 124 Columbia Heights and the old Chruch that became the first New York HQ is rich with history.
